New Process Measurement Demands in Battery Manufacturing

Rapid expansion of power and energy-storage battery capacity places demands on process measurement that differ from conventional chemical production.

Slurry transfer

Cathode and anode slurries are high-viscosity, solids-bearing non-Newtonian fluids. Turbine and vortex meters do not apply; electromagnetic meters require adequate conductivity; Coriolis meters are accurate but costly. In practice, an electromagnetic meter with periodic gravimetric verification is the more economical approach.

Coating and drying

Temperature uniformity in the coating oven directly affects electrode consistency. Multi-point sheathed RTDs across oven zones, plus hot-air duct flow monitoring, are recommended. Note that RTD response time must be much shorter than the zone control period, or the control loop will oscillate.

Formation and electrolyte filling

Electrolyte is highly corrosive and extremely moisture-sensitive. Contact-type instruments must use fluoride-resistant materials with no dead pockets on wetted surfaces. Non-contact or fully sealed constructions are preferable here.

Common requirement

Battery lines demand consistency more than individual accuracy: if the deviation across dozens of instruments on one line is not held within a narrow band, product consistency suffers. Selection should therefore consider batch consistency, and suppliers should provide per-unit calibration records.
