Petrochemical plants combine high temperature, high pressure, aggressive corrosion and flammable atmospheres, placing extreme demands on instrument safety and reliability.
Typical measurement points
Crude distillation and catalytic units: 80 GHz radar level meters on column levels, electromagnetic or vortex meters on feed flow, sheathed RTDs with integrated transmitters on side-draw temperatures.
Tank farms: magnetostrictive gauges for simultaneous level and oil-water interface measurement, with radar meters as redundancy to satisfy both custody and safety monitoring.
Utilities: vortex meters with temperature/pressure compensation for steam metering; electromagnetic meters and pressure transmitters on circulating water systems.
Selection notes
Wetted materials follow media corrosivity — 316L, Hastelloy or tantalum. Hazardous areas require intrinsically safe or flameproof products with the relevant certification. High-temperature media need condensate syphons or extended impulse lines. All instruments should have good EMC performance for the VFD-heavy plant environment.
