Pharmaceutical and food industries have explicit requirements for hygienic rating, cleanability and material compliance, differing markedly from general industrial selection.
Hygienic design essentials
No dead pockets: wetted parts should be flush-diaphragm or fully welded with no crevices or recesses that resist cleaning, satisfying CIP/SIP requirements.
Surface finish: wetted surfaces electropolished to Ra ≤ 0.4 μm to inhibit microbial adhesion and residue.
Connection: Tri-Clamp fittings for fast removal and cleaning validation.
Typical measurement points
Sanitary pressure transmitters and radar level meters on fermenters and compounding tanks; multi-point RTDs for steriliser temperature validation; electromagnetic or mass flow meters for accurate batching and filling.
Compliance
Product-contact materials should be supplied with material certificates, and where required comply with FDA or 3-A sanitary standards. Instruments must operate stably through SIP steam sterilisation cycles.
